CHARACTER
Character Name: Erestor
Canon: Tolkien
Age: NO AGE GIVEN but I play him as slightly older than Elrond, if that helps, but he LOOKS like a late 20s/early 30s guy
Timeline: The end of Lord of the Rings
Fortunately for me, Maglor and Erestor have very little reason to interact although they do know each other (hey, you live forever and you will know everyone too one way or another) but I mean to make sure they never actually talk together, and I would not anticipate that it would need to happen.

Personality: "Thus we return once more to the destroying of the Ring. And yet we come no nearer. What strength have we for the finding of the Fire in which it was made? That is the path of despair. Of folly I would say, if the long wisdom of Elrond did not forbid me." - this is one of the only three lines (and the last, also) that Erestor speaks, alas, but we can conjecture some things from it.

First, he defers to Elrond, even if he disagrees, but he is not afraid to voice his dissent. This matches with what little we know of him, that he is Elrond's Chief Councillor, someone whose advice Elrond values. We can also see that Erestor respects authority, but not so much that he does not feel the need to snark at it from time to time. He is logical - 'we need X to do Y, but we do not have X. However surely doing A is a stupid grasp in the dark' - but not so much that he does not recognize things like desperation (although he does seem rather sarcastic about it).

The second line is technically the first "Could we not still send messages to him and obtain his help? It seems that he has a power even over the Ring." ... "But within those bounds nothing seems to dismay him. Would he not take the Ring and keep it there, for ever harmless?"

Erestor is here referring the Tom Bombadil, who Frodo mentions meeting, and who has apparently the ability to not only refuse the Ring, but for it to have no affect on him at all. This demonstrates that Erestor is familiar with his existence, if not the extent of his power - as Elrond's councilor, he was undoubtedly required to be at least passingly familiar with anyone of note, and is probably on semi-friendly tones with all the local leaders. Also it shows that Erestor is fairly logical, putting forwards the obvious solution. Note that he does not mind being wrong! He is shot down, and he simply accepts that. If you have better information than him, he's happy to readjust his facts to accommodate. Note that he is merely suggestion logical pathways, always as a suggestion, not statement. However also note that Elrond is never the one who corrects him - Glorfindel does once, when he has information that Erestor does not, and Gandalf does once, again, when he has information Erestor does not. They are not rude or abrupt about it - it is a very civilized back and forth, quite possibly similar to ones they have had before, while Elrond sits back and waits for his closest advisors to bring him a logical plan.

And the third line is this "Then there are but two courses, as Glorfindel has already declared: to hide the Ring for ever, or to unmake it. But both are beyond our power. Who will read this riddle for us?"

So, Erestor is the guy who sums up the argument, pulling the threads together and asking "well, now what?", again matching with his position as Chief Councillor. All the points have been discussed, the information clearly laid out, time to move on.

In summary: Erestor is intelligent, rational, logical and has apparently a rather deadpan sense of humor. He is respected and respects others who demonstrate competence. He is not afraid to speak up, but respects chain of command, and works well in a team. He's basically Prowl from Transformers

Note that if you look at the balance of how it would work, Glorfindel is Elrond's Captain of the Guard, he's the guy who goes out and patrols the bounds, Erestor is the guy who holds the fort at home. He's probably not been out of Rivendell in centuries when he goes to Arwen's wedding. Gandalf (the third in the balance, if you like) is the information guy. He wanders far away and comes back with the news, and they work well with him but he's not always there. And Elrond, of course, is the boss.

On the flip side, Erestor is quite logical. He seems to dislike 'foolish' actions, and is likely the sort to overthink things, generally. He can come across as cold and dismissive, because he does not like to indulge emotions. Possibly this may be related to trauma in his past - I headcanon him as losing both his parents fairly young, and him growing up at least in part under the Feanorian banner, and if you'd like a poster child for 'impulsive actions taken that cause ridiculously terrible final outcomes' it'd be all of them. He locks all of his emotions down tight and isn't terribly good at expressing them, believing himself to be better able to do his job that way. He is, in many ways, also a workaholic, and possibly a little lonely. Being someone who once worked for the notorious kinslayers he has a fair bit of guilt tucked away as well, and doesn't think very highly of himself, despite that others obviously do, and is rather shy. He doesn't have many people who he would consider his friends, and note that all of his closest contacts are his work colleagues - his lord, his lady, their children, and Glorfindel. He's very loyal to those friends he has, even if he maybe doesn't think they see him that way in return (he's wrong).

History: RIGHT SO THE ONLY CANON FACT WE HAVE ABOUT ERESTOR IS THAT HE IS ELROND'S CHIEF COUNCILLOR. That's. Literally all. SO.

I postulate he's known Elrond for quite a long time, to hold such a important position. So - old friends, at the least. He's noted to arrive with Glorfindel for Arwen's wedding, and based on the description of him as chief of Elrond's councilors, he's both likely to be VERY good at his job, and probably reasonably close to Glorfindel, who is also described as sitting at Elrond's right hand (ie in a place of high honor).

My Erestor's story goes like this.

A long time ago a bunch of Noldor came to Middle-earth chasing some shiny jewels. Now, if it was just Feanor's seven insane sons, perhaps this story would be very short, but Feanor's sons and brothers and nephews and nieces were lords and ladies with followers of their own. One of them fell in love with one of the Laiquendi scouts. Despite the ever present risk of war, they had a son, she and he, but the fate of those who follow the sons of Feanor is not kind, and by the time Erestor was himself an adult, both his parents were dead. He worked as a scout, and when Maglor and Maedhros kidnapped two young peredhil from the ruins of Sirion, he was assigned as their tutor. When they were released, Erestor followed them, and stayed by Elrond's side.

And he's been there ever since.

Elrond and Elros were sent to Gil-Galad and Cirdan, and Erestor would have done the same, moving from tutor to a more equal role initially, and then the balance of power would tip the other way. As Elrond and Elros rose in rank, Erestor went back to the job he began with - scouting, although he glued himself to Elrond's side and began then to start in the role that would one day become Chief Counselor. He was one of the scouts who found a hidden valley in the foothills of the Misty Mountains during the retreat from the destruction of Eregion, and helped Elrond in establishing it. When his lord brought home the Lady Celebrian he rejoiced, and like all the Valley was quickly enamoured of their Lady. He loved the three children she bore him like a strict but fond uncle, and grieved with the family when she was captured by orcs and eventually had to sail. With Celebrian gone he took up much of the work she would herself have managed, and put away his sword for good (or so he hopes, in any case, although he does practice, from time to time).

Abilities: He's smart and logical but apart from that he has the standard Elvish abilities as such:
(1) Immortal as in "does not noticably physically age" and not as in "cannot die"
(2) Better senses (hearing/sight/smell) then mortals
(3) stupidly light-footed as in "does not leave footprints on snow
(4) talks to trees (and rocks and animals and... ) and get answers
(5) stronger & faster than your average mortal with better reflexes and able to live on.. basically nothing for long stretches of time
(6) faster healing than your average mortal
(7) he glows. Not as much as elves like glorfindel or even maglor or maedhros, but elves have glowy souls (look I don't write this stuff)
(8) He doesn't need to sleep, but does that weird "I AM MEDITATING ON PRETTY THINGS" thing that elves do

Relationships to Canon Characters: Glorfindel's best friend, Elrond & Celebrian's Chief Counselor/Seneschal

Network/Actionspam Sample:
[ He steps off the train as if he has always known how, with no evidence of discomfort or unease, face a well-trained pleasant mask. Unlike most of the elves of his kindred his clothing is neat, and all in black, folds almost severely starched, and an eyebrow crooks slightly in curiosity as he looks around ]

Hm. An unusual means of arrival to an unusual location.

[ His voice is blandly curious ]

Your pardon, but would anyone happen to know where this is, and how one might return? Failing that, any information about this place would be welcome - I find it helps to know as much as one can. My name, incidentally, is Erestor, and if anyone who knows the Lord and Lady of Imladris is present, I would be grateful.
